Tudhoe Village
From earliest times Tudhoe has been an agricultural village. The name is said to be derived from the Old English based on the personal name Tuda + hoh meaning hill spur, translating to Tuda’s hill. Another interesting theory is that the name derives from Tod or Tud which is the old name for a fox.
Tudhoe Village was part of the Parish of Brancepeth until it was incorporated into the newly formed Urban District of Spennymoor in 1894. With the sinking of Tudhoe Colliery in 1864 the village of Tudhoe Colliery developed to house the miners and their families.
