Sunderland Bridge
Sunderland by the Bridge. The bridge being the old bridge which crosses the River Wear at Croxdale and contains elements of 13th Century work in its fabric. Sunderland refers to a detached or private piece of land (sundered land), being in this case a detached piece of St. Oswald’s Parish, Durham across the River Wear.
